Send in your character sheets

Hey, just FYI, I need everyone's character sheet from my world of darkness campaign.

Scan it, or email it, or hand it to me in person, or whatever, but I'd like to have a look see after some things have been brought to my attention.

So, Roleplaying huh?

Ok, so we've gotten sloppy this week when it comes to organizing games.

So, this Saturday, I'm busy.
This Friday and Thursday, I'm not busy.

Therefore, can we do a Friday game of (I assume) B5 this Friday at 4?

Is Nancy coming? Is Li coming? Is Norm free? Is Bashar in the country? Does skip have her char sheet ready yet?

(By the way, Norman, I don't think she does have her char sheet anymore, so she says she probably wants a new character, leaving me as the only character left from the original game). I'll send you an email on something else too.

As for Bashar's game: I got you something cool Bashar... Well... I got me something cool, but you can borrow it. :P

Balance in Roleplaying Games Part 2

Last blog update we talked about balance in roleplaying games.

Today, I'm going to talk about how to achieve balance in a roleplaying game.

First of all, here comes a warning: A good portion of this is going to be math.
A very good example of balance in my Opinion is the D&D critical system, and the "Improved Critical" feat.

There are 5 types of weapon in D&D when it comes to crits. You can increase the multiplier (x2, x3, x4), or you can increase the threat range (20, 19-20, 18-20).
x2
19-20/x2
18-20/x2
x3
x4

Now these are not balanced with each other, they are supposed to be different after all, but lets look at how they react to having "Keen" applied to them.

x2 Keened gives a damage increase of 4.5%. (210 -> 220)
19-20/x2 gives a damage increase of 9%. (220 -> 240)
18-20/x2 gives a damage increase of 13%. (230 -> 260)

Now lets look at increasing the multiplier.
x2 Keened, as we just saw gives 4.5% (210 -> 220)
x3 gives a damage increase of 9% (220 -> 240)
x4 gives a damage increase of 13% (230 -> 260)

As you can see, Keen does it's job equally well irrespective of what style of critical improvement is caused, yet they do it differently. Do you want to do damage more often, or do you want to do bigger damage in single blows? Either way the total is exactly the same.

The balance doesn't go overboard and make all weapons the same. You still have a sliding scale of weapons, that have 2 styles, and that are impacted equivalently between the two.

This in my opinion is the perfect feat when it comes to demonstrating balance within a game system.

"But surely Mr. Baalthazaq, you should be comparing it to other feats, not itself!"

This is partially true. Each feat should be balanced against other feats to see if the feat shown here is worth more than some other feat. Of course it should. How should this be done though.

Unfortunately, actuary tables for one thing. Statistical analysis. If I get +1 DC to my illusion spells, there is no damage I'm comparing it to. I'm basically saying "How much more often can I trick things", and how do we measure that against extra damage from a weapon?

The second way of doing it is simply going "which would I rather have?", which skips a lot of the math. If you are having a hard time deciding which to pick, we might be able to consider it as "close enough" to balanced that it is acceptable, but don't think for a second that means you're necessarily correct.

This poses a new problem however. You don't create feats based on the math, you create feats based on a concept, and so you should. "I want to be able to backflip through a window", not "I wish a statistically equivalent bonus to the character when near portcullises to offset the rarity of the event".

There's no way however that I'm going to think of a feat that gives me enough of a bonus in any way that it's going to compete with something as simple as Improved critical.

One way around this is not using a feat system that occurs every few levels (like D&D) or one where all uneven Talents cost the same (Warhammer), but to value individual feats according to the usefulness.

You want to jump out of a window? 25XP.
You want to do double damage when you are on higher ground? 250 XP.
You want to do triple? 500XP.

This way our imaginations are not limited by the system, the system becomes a tool to enable our imaginations.

You want to have the Great Cthulu as your mount? Why say no to it? Say 500'000'000'000 XP, and let the player earn it.

"Aha! But then what will happen i..."

Not so fast, I was getting to that. When the other players are running around with 499999999000 spent XP that the player is still saving up, he's going to be in a world of trouble until that last point.

So don't make it a single feat. Let him build it.
Ride a mount: 100 XP.
Ride exotic mounts: 150 XP.
Learn Magic: 400XP.
Summon: 200XP
Summon Monster: 1000XP.
Increase summonable monster's level: 1000XP*level per level.
Ride Monsters: 350 XP.
Give monster tentacles: 100XP per tentacle.
Increase Monster Size category: 1000XP*Size Category ^2.
Etc.

This lets him scale up his monster, and the things he can summon, slowly and on par with the other characters who can spend similar XP to do similar things. It doesn't *have* to scale up to riding the great Cthulu, but there's no reason to limit your system in that fashion.

It can be limited in play to determine what goes on:

If you're doling out 5 XP per session, the players won't be planning to get to their target in 38.5 million years of sessions (assuming we play every other week). They'll be taking those 20XP feats like "+1% chance to hit" or "+1% Intelligence".

The beauty of that is you have a system where the DM chooses the power level, not the system.
"I want gritty realistic modern detective story!". Done.
"I want to play a Thor like character in a mythological story where we are the first gods!". Done.

The Enemy Within

Our intrepid adventurers are continuing their journey north to the glorious regional capital of Middenheim - the City of the White Wolf. Things have not been going smoothly...

Despite being drugged and kidnapped by members of the Cult of the Purple Hand they managed to escape and make a few new allies on the way. After spending some time at an archery tourney they decided to listen to the pleas of a small group of peasants from the nearby village of Delberz who were begging for help in dealing with Beastman raids. Compassion and the fact that Delberz is on the way to Middenheim anyway caused them to take up the cause.

The adventurers soon found the Beastmen raids to anything but typical. A brief daylight incursion into the thick forest surrounding the village almost cost the life of one party member and that same evening the Beastmen displayed a level of tactical aptitude not usually seen in such fell creatures. This may be due in part to the Warrior of Chaos spotted by the adventurers directing the Beastmen attacks.

Despite the odds the party prevailed the first night's attacks with two seriously injured and a the villagers encouraged by their courage and valour in the face of dire odds. However as the dust settles and the sun rises certain questions are coming to mind…how and why is a Warrior of Chaos leading a group of Beastmen just four or five days ride from the regional capital and why haven’t the local authorities done anything meaningful to help the good people of Delberz till now?

Balance in Roleplaying Games

If I had to pick one thing that is most important when dealing with roleplaying games, it is this: Balance.

Balance is everything. Balance is the reason for the system. Additionally, this should be inherent in the system, not something that you add later on. It is not OK because you can change the rules, just like my car is not OK without an engine just because I know how to build an engine. I'm not going to just shrug my shoulders when the dealer hands me an engine-less car.

Every system suffers from this.
D&D: Not all feats are equal.
Able learner (everything is a class skill) is clearly superior to various feats which make 2 or 3 things a class skill.
Menacing Demeanor (+4 intimidate) clearly superior to Skill Focus(Intimidate) (+3 to intimidate).

Warhammer suffers from this.
Flee! gives you +1 movement, for D10 rounds, under special circumstances.
Fleet footed gives you the same, for infinite rounds, any circumstances.

They cost the same. They aren't worth the same. Sure, fixes can be applied (Lets make it +D10 movement for 1 round. The total is the same, but the advantage is the headstart you get, which is exactly what flee should be).

However all this is doing is building the engine for the car you bought. Do I like to homebrew? Of course! Do I like to customize? Absolutely, but I'm changing my automobile (because I want to) to this:

I'm not fixing it (because I have to) from this:

The Enemy Within

After a long pause we picked up my Warhmammer Fantasy Roleplay campaign which has been running on and off for around a year now. We also welcomed a new player, Nancy to the group who we hope enjoyed the session and will become a regular member.
The game opened with the characters locked in a cell and not remembering much about how they got there. Being the inventive people they are they managed to escape and eventually found out they were being held by their old enemies, The Cult of the Purple Hand. With careful planning and team work they were able to defeat their captors and the re-inforcements sent to take them goodness knows where.
They are now on route to the town of Brokel for a much needed rest before continuing to the magestic city fortress of Middenheim to track down the last remaining member of the Von Wittgenstein family, Gotthard - and hopefully get some answers...

Family Matters on break

My game is done until my writer's block goes away.

You have 1 year of in game downtime and 20XP to spend.

Everyone gets 1 point in Status Camarilla, and 1 point in resources (not you Neil), 1 point in contacts, and 1 point in haven.

Norman you can have a point in Auspex.
Bashar you can have a point in Majesty.
Neil you can have a point in any martial art skill.
Heidi, you can choose a martial art skill, or put a point in any discipline bar the custom one.

Will write a summary when I get reminded.

Cool story

So, I was reading through some stories on a thread called "great moments in D&D" and came across this little gem.

First of all Wild Mages: Wild Mages basically cast spells more powerfully, but the magic they wield has unpredictable effects sometimes called a "wild magic surge".

In the coming story, the wild mage is Chaotic Neutral, and is secretly working for the bad guy.

The party were coming up against the big bad of the campaign, a scheming wizard who had taken control of most of the country. Player A, the wild mage was, as befitting a wild mage, chaotic neutral, and befitting a player who had confused chaotic neutral with jerk, he was about to screw the party over.

For the upcoming battle he had informed the big bad of their plans, and had convinced the party that he had a foolproof plan, that he would cast a spell specifically designed by the resistance in the country that would kill the big bad (long story.) Anyway, the betrayal comes in the final battle.

Player A passes note to DM: "I cast invisibility spell on the enemy instead"

Player A: NOW! See what happens to my enemies! (Casts spell)

(Predictably) Wild Surge (DM: *Giggle* Player A: Oh...)

Result: Roll 4 more times, all effects apply (DM: Teehee. Player A: Uh Oh....)

Results: Music plays in background, Target sex changes, All cloth on target turns to dust, Target knocked unconscious. (DM: Muahaha! Player A: Gah!)

Spell Cast! Result: Big Bad now an unconscious naked female. With some romantic music playing in the background.

Party: ... this is so wrong ...

The Essence of WH40K

There is something that is somewhat flawed in the WH40K universe. It has been the case since first edition of the battle game and has continued far into the roleplaying version.

I feel this sums it up.

Session Summary for June 18th

Well, the meeting was certainly eventful.

As you'll remember from last session, a very important meeting was taking place, and Sean (Bashar) effectively offered up his services, spotting an opportunity to promote his club as a place for all the top members of the elite in vampire society.

The session started well, security was bumped up, and everything seemed in order, with the exception of Frank (Norman), who decided to sit in the middle of the room staring at the walls.

Unbeknown to anyone else in the room, the reasoning behind this was that from his perspective, the walls were a seething mass of maws, claws and ungodly beasts. From everyone else's perspective, who still saw the soft velvety walls of this "Gentleman's Club", he was a nutjob, confirming their earlier suspicions after gossip spread of his trip to a psychiatrist.

The Prince was in attendance, and sent for a package, which turned out to be the boy, emaciated and drained of much of his blood, which were now being kept in vials.

It turns out the boy is in possession of a power which allows him to pinpoint those with supernatural powers. This not only means he would have the ability to hunt down vampires, but also that he would have the ability to unite others of his kind with various powers against the vampires, and thus the decision was made to end him.

Patrick(Neil) took issue with this, and stood between the boy and what was in effect the entire Camarilla. Diplomatic as ever however, he did keep his swords sheathed.

Eventually, through some quick political maneuvering on the part of Alice (the Toreador Primogen), it was decided that Patrick would be the sole drinker of the boy's blood. Which he did, though not killing him.

At this point before any more could befall the boy, the walls erupted, with the maws of Frank's nightmares coming to life and besieging the club, snatching the boy, and escaping.

The only major casualty was Alice, the Primogen, who is now dead.

The werewolves who attacked were somehow all Logan, a single werewolf allied with a spirit called "Dadoti". A name he originally used as his own.

As far as the Camarilla is concerned, this was a Werewolf attack on a Vampire safehouse.

Next game starts still in the club, directly after the attack.

Session Organization: Saturday June 26th

Ok, Norman can't make it, and I don't have anything properly ready for Saturday yet. I'm thinking we could potentially let Bashar DM a one off or something, or alternatively I could DM a one off of some description.

(Or alternatively still we could just go to the movies or something).

Opinions?

Games on hold

Thought I'd just give a quick rundown of games that are currently on hold or in progress. Everyone keeps talking about various campaigns, and reboots of old campaigns and whatnot, so I thought I'd put up the list. It is quite ridiculous.

What do people want to do with them?

Neil: Runequest campaign.
Neil: Legend of the 5 Rings campaign (New!)
Heidi: Dragonwraith campaign.
Heidi: My little pony campaign.
Norman: Babylon 5 campaign.
Norman: Warhammer Fantasy campaign.
Norman: Warhammer 40K campaign.
Norman: Judge Dredd campaign (Ongoing).
Norman: Star Trek campaign (New!).
Omar: Pangean Fantasy campaign (Working on a new Epic Level Campaign that follows on from the last).
Omar: Family Matters World of Darkness campaign (Ongoing).
Omar: Planescape campaign (Work in progress).
Omar: The First Gods (Freeform DMing experiment).
Omar: I don't actually have a campaign idea here, but I want to test out a game system I'm developing. I'm therefore considering doing a shadowrun setting, with the game system I made up. (Magic in, guns with autofire in, cybernetics in, etc).
Bashar: DMing Debut! (Undetermined system/setting, New!).

Personally I'm up for playing any of them. Are there any I've missed? I've included all the ones *I* know are in planning. Any that you guys are planning that I don't know about?

Let me know.

Saturday 19 June 2010

So I was going over some old notes...

I was going over my old notes today for Neil's old Runequest campaign saying as we said we might be starting it up again.

I went through the village I designed for one thing, and tried to remember what all my equations were supposed to do and had some success. I'm thinking of adding in something that will generate facial features for all 400 villagers, but first I want a proper distribution map.

Anyway, that's besides the point.

My point was, old notes. I thought you might like this:

I am hated by "The Hound". His family hate me too. My family aren't too pleased either.
Cover story: We're searching for the "Destruction of Elaria" in Sarth.
I have a horse!
I have a Shiny Rock! It is shiny. Neil said I could keep it. I have big plans for the rock.
I speak Draconic! "Rawr *breathe fire* snort" means hello.
My horse died. :(
I gave away a book on runecasting. In retrospect, possibly should have kept it.
I have another horse! Not as big as the last one.
We met a dead elf named Lerithril. Tried to grab his sword before running. Didn't work.
My new horse is now my new dead horse. It also has no front legs. Not moving as fast as she used to.
Condoin is a Lumean name. (Addendum: Who the hell is Condoin, and why have I written down his name?)
Got offered a horse. Decided not to bother this time.
Cercy is pretty. (Addendum: Who the hell are these people?!)
Horse got killed in fight outside. Probably the one I was going to buy.
I have a village! Must make sure to look after them better than the horses.
I'm building a school and stuff for the villagers.
Lady wants us to look for a werewolf-making belt.
I have a horse again! I got it at the end of the session, so it's still alive. Still got my shiny rock though!

Not quite as good as my WH40K notes, which said nothing except "Note: Take better notes".

Session Summary for May 28th and June 4th

Collating two sessions in one due to laziness, sickness and business. :) Thankfully one is quite short.

The battle at the hospital commenced as expected. The party showed up to defend the boy or extricate him as required, and several Sabbat were recognized from the get go.

The party also identified a few hotspots quite quickly and moved to intercept them.

They managed to get in the hospital without being spotted by anyone important, with Sean making use of his earlier contacts, as well as befriending the security guards, and then things took a turn for the worse as the Sabbat plan was unveiled.

A Malkavian had taken over the psychiatric ward and was passing on the psychosis of the inmates randomly throughout the hospital, bringing pandemonium while his team acted to grab the boy.

Luckily Carly and Sean were there to keep the masses at bay while Frank dealt with the source of the problem. Unfortunately for Frank as he watched his adversary dodge the bullets he was gripped with the touch of madness which sent him reeling back into the shadows.

Getting somewhat of a grip on himself, he opened up the nearby cupboard of cleaning supplies, found some extremely flammable liquids and hurled a couple of gallons of it in the direction of the feared foe, setting him alight, disrupting his plans and causing him to abandon the hospital.

Meanwhile Patrick had turned into the human blender and was happily mowing down some of the Sabbat's new recruits. That is until a particularly tough recruit decided to join the fray taking a massive chunk out of him, and Patrick's blades having no impact on the creature's reptillianesque skin.

Figuring there was more than one way of skinning a reptillianesque vampire beast from beyond reality's veil however, Patrick grabbed his sword with one hand and rammed it down the throat of the snapping beast.

When he turned around however, the boy was missing, stolen away by a blonde woman.

*********************************

The next session begun with the revelation that the boy was safe and well with Alexandra, and the party was given two weeks to "rest" and recuperate.

In that time they all decided to carry on with their own private projects.
Patrick continued establishing his Japanese connections within his business.
Carly went missing for several days.
Frank went to see a Vampire Psychiatrist for his newly acquired derangements.

Sean got to work properly establishing his "Gentlemen's Club", and set up a meeting with the Prince. The prince took this as an opportunity to see the entire group and looked kindly on their work so far.

The party noticed that out of everyone, Carly was being treated with the most respect in the room by the prince. They also noticed that one of the guests was a banged up Gangrel, later shown to be the Gangrel primogen that was thought to be kidnapped earlier.

He also arranged to have a meeting at Sean's club, both to celebrate the opening, officially recognize it, and give it Elysium status. It will also be a fairly important meeting by the sounds of things.

Judge Dredd 2nd Session “Prison Break”

The Rookies were called to a riot in progress at the Aspen Prison and Hard Labour facility located at the top of Aspen mountain out in the cursed earth wastelands. Landing in their H-Wagon they secured the landing zone and rallied with the head of security and his team before heading off to escort a Technician to help restore power to the deactivated automated prison sentry guns.

With the guns back online things quietened down somewhat. The riot had turned into a takeover but fortunately the guards had a the foresight to disable all the prison vehicles thus restricting the prisoners to escaping by foot down a sub zero mountain and through a cannibal mutant held shanty town below…

The Rookies are beginning to suspect foul play as two prisoner remain at large, one of whom is Armon Gill, the former Space Corps trooper who killed over 40 prominent media and academic personalities who were openly critical of the Justice Dept. What has raised the Rookies suspicions is their Tac Group Leader O’Reily has a reputation for being heavy handed – and during the quelling of the riot O’Reily took out an H-Wagon for a good 20 minutes claiming he was checking the perimeter for escapees…of course without evidence the Rookies will have to keep quiet or face charges of false accusation.

The session ended with the successful (and peaceful!) release of the Warden thanks to the players negotiation skills. Now they will be asked to help recover Gill and his accomplice Stonewall….

Neat article about how roleplaying evolved over time, amongst other things.

Porn Stars and D&D

I've not gotten around to posting up a summary yet, so in appeasement, I'm uploading this instead. I hit it with my axe proving that women do indeed occasionally roleplay.

Even women who happen to be pole dancers, strippers and porn stars.

Enjoy! (Link safe for work).

Judge Dredd RPG First session overview

After recently graduating from 15 years at the Academy of Law the group of Rookie Judges (known as Rooks) were assigned to Sector 321 until the watchful eye of Tac Group Leader O'Reily. A few hours into their patrol they are called into to deal with a civilian riot which turns out to be an armed gang of juves terrorising an open market.
The Rooks show immediately what 15 years in the hardest training programme on earth is worth and put down the ringleaders of the gang and force a surrender of the remainders within a few minutes. Whilst they are sentencing and cuffing the perps to a holding post Judge O'Reily is called away to help with a block war in progress on the other side of the sector.

Whilst waiting for a Catch Wagon to pick up the gang Control calls in a ARV in progress two blocks away. The team are the closest Judges on hand and decide to respond to the call.

The ARV turns out to be a well armed gang from Davis Block holding up the famous Pure Greed Jewellery store in Munroe Block. Tensions have been running high between the two blocks since the opening of the Mega-Munroe mall which has brought a lot of jobs and new things to do for the bored citizens of Munroe block...making Davis block green with envy.

The gang, lead by Marko Shermer, take hostages and barricade themselves in the store. When the Judges arrive they are met with hails of gunfire but no one is hurt. Despite choosing to negotiate and even securing the release of two hostages the Rooks decide to move in (an calculated or uncalculated risk depending on how you see it!) Fortunately aside from several perp fatalities and injuries and minor scratches and scraps for one Judge the hostages are freed and the perps are arrested. The discovery of an explosive device results in a long sentence for the gang leader and reduced sentences for at least one gang member who aided the Rooks.

A nice quiet start to the morning shift in Mega City One!

Sunday 9 May 2010

Session Summary 7th May

This week's session finally saw the introduction of "TJ".

TJ has been working for the Camarilla investigating the boy Scott Stallard, whose mother was murdered, and whose father killed himself in prison.

The Camarilla became suspicious of Tala, Teris, and the Sabbat's involvement with the boy, and hired TJ to look further into the matter to determine why.

In the meantime, the Nosferatu also commissioned him to look into the work of Shane Stallard, the father, and to finish developing the work he started.

TJ, having lost his computer to Carly and Frank, was given some contact details and got in touch with them, explaining to the party his role, and why the Sabbat were after him.

Meanwhile Sean got a phone call from his contact, letting him know that the boy was to be kidnapped the next morning.

The party are currently at the hospital, waiting for the shit to hit the fan.

In other news:
Patrick Bateman's company has just opened up it's Japanese division, Newspaper articles will be discussing his new posting, and what this means for him personally.

Judge Dredd RPG

It is the early 21st Century. Some five decades years after humanity’s worst nightmare came true. The world ripped itself to shreds in massive atomic warfare. Entire regions around the world have been laid waste, turned into radioactive badlands inhabited by the deformed, mutated and insane.

With governments and countries gone, already developing special police forces took over. Raising up huge walled and shielded Mega –Cities spreading over the ruins of dozens of conurbations. These special police forces became the Judges. Trained from childhood to be tough, incorruptible upholders of the law they fulfil the role of police officer, judge, jury and when needed, executioner on the mean streets of the 22nd century. The Judges also oversee and run most of the governmental and administration duties of cities.

This will be a one off game (perhaps taking more taking more than one session) for me to test the system and potential of the game. It will be set in Mega-City One – a vast metropolis which covers most of what was the Eastern Seaboard of the USA. A place where every one of the 400 million citizens is a potential lawbreaker.

All characters will be newly graduated cadet Judges, known as Rookies, who have just passed their first supervised patrols out on the mean streets of Mega-City one…for character creation please email me at Optimusnorm at gmail dot com and we can go over details.

Tuesday 27 April 2010

Session for the Week. 25th of April to 1st of May 2010.

Hello ladies and gentlemen.

We have no plans for a game this week. Again we have complete radio silence with occasional telephone calls and texts I get asking when/where/if the game is occurring.

We have at least 2 options.
1) I can DM/GM/Host if necessary. I'd rather do something than nothing. I can do so on any of the 3 days we usually game.

2) Ironman 2. Probably Thursday night. I'll need confirmation on this pretty fast if we're going to get tickets.

3) Someone else can do something (Fringe game? Dragonwraith (Skip's) game? WH40K? DND4.0 one off? Bashar attempting to DM something to get his DMing wings? I can DM a one off freeform session just to try it out? I can try a Pathfinder game?)

4) Something else?

Also if you're thinking of starting a game, put it up somewhere. Talking about it in person just doesn't seem to work.

Sunday 25 April 2010

Session Summary 22nd of April

Today I realized that contrary to real life, splitting up doesn't help a party accomplish things faster. In real life, you can split a party, and each member can do something.

In a game, the progress is only made as fast as the DM can describe each sequence of events.

Finnigy:
Followed our new Gangrel friend and found out that the next target is in fact the boy. He doesn't know why or how, but he will contact the party when he discovers more.

Bateman:
Now knows at least a meeting point for our Sabbat Saboteurs, and managed to wipe the floor with a similarly super-speeded melee specialist.

Frank Callahan, and Carly Moreno:
Have discovered some electrical schematics in the hands of "TJ"'s ghoul. They also discovered that they are clearly not the only ones looking for them. They also took "TJ"'s computer with them when they left.

Wednesday 21 April 2010

Pathfinder

I've been looking fairly recently at Pathfinder, a game system extremely close to Dungeons and Dragons, but with (in my opinion) a significant number of improvements.

It is 100% compatible with D&D 3.0 and 3.5, but just has some nice fixes here and there. (Stealth being a single attribute in 4.0 was done long ago in Pathfinder. Class progression is usually smoother. Balance is shifted around a little).

Anyway, putting up a link to Pathfinder's SRD, in particular, those familiar with D&D should look at how they've improved the Arcane Archer, and Arcane Trickster.

Most impressive however to me, is how they have changed Sorcerer as Rob was saying. There is now actually a reason not to take a prestige class when you're a sorcerer. Before, not multi-classing as a sorcerer was ALWAYS a disadvantage, without exception.

I think if I ever run any D&D games from now on, it'll be Pathfinder as the base system.

Sunday 18 April 2010

Session for the Week. 18th to 24th April 2010.

Ok, looks like I'm DMing the next two sessions.

Date: Thursday 22nd of April.
Location: Neil's place.
Time: 8:15PM to midnightishesque.
Game: Family Matters (My World of Darkness Campaign)
DM/GM/Host: Omar

New Player: Salman.
Salman will in theory be joining on the 22nd, I have an idea where to put him.

Put down suggestions for what we're ordering below and maybe we can save some time ordering too.

Friday 16 April 2010

Session Summary 15th April

Todays session didn't progress too much.

The players interrogated a Gangrel who was otherwise quite willing to help them without it. They have now discovered a group within the Camarilla allied with the Sabbat (a rival vampire group).

They have been told that the next target in a series will be at a hospital.

They have a reference to someone who may be able to help them with the Sabbat problem called TJ.

The Ipad and GMing.

I just found a 3 part series on the new Ipad, and how it could be used for gaming, cutting down on the number of cumbersome laptops we currently have at any gaming table.

Well worth checking out, even if you're a skeptic, and bear in mind. At the time of publishing, the Ipad is 6 days old. More apps are sure to arrive.

Session for the Week. 11th to 17th of April 2010.

From emails I have gathered:
We will be gaming:

Date: Thursday 15th of April.
Location: Neil's place.
Time: 8:15PM to midnightishesque.
Game: Family Matters (My World of Darkness Campaign)
DM/GM/Host: Omar

Everyone happy with this?

Possible new player: Salman

Another possible player from comedy and acting, he'll be joining one session of World of Darkness just to try it out, no commitment other than that. He's in Pygmalion with me, so has some acting chops which should please some of you (You specifically, yeah you know who I mean. No, not... on the left, yeah, that one).

He's also in my improv group so should be perfect for roleplaying. Fairly nice guy. Seems like he'd gel well with current group. First reaction to "Vampire game" was "Sounds cool... wait, it's not that twilight crap is it" which is pretty much the perfect attitude to have. :)

Possible new player: Sabina

A girl from comedy class said she was interested in trying out roleplaying but never found a group before, so I tentatively invited her along. (Not on any specific date).

She's a SciFi geek more than a fantasy geek, big into Star Wars. I told her a little bit about WH40K which she seemed interested in but I know Norm isn't going to be doing that for a while. (On the other hand, she was going to be busy for a couple of months herself).

I think it would be good to raise the girl quota too (20% isn't ideal), especially with someone who won't end up DMing sessions of my little pony, or have us questing for shoes.

Family Matters: Campaign Summary

Normally I would use a post like this to summarise the previous session, but saying as we've been running sessions for a while now I'll summarise all previous sessions to date. I'll try to be as brief as possible.

Opening:
The game opened with the murder, which Frank Callahan, a detective (played by Norm) was sent to investigate, a woman's body (Cecile Stallard) was lying in her living room, bludgeoned to death with a hot iron. The investigation quickly gets underway, and the police are happy pointing the finger at her blood stained husband (Shane).

Frank quickly discovers some things that don't add up. His alibi, a mistress, doesn't seem to exist at first, but further investigation does point at her trying to cover her tracks. Their 3 year old son (Scott Stallard, and Autistic child prodigy of sorts) seems to remember 2 other women at the scene of the crime, with some other witnesses confirming it. Not only that, but he was taken away for a few days by one of them. The timings are off too. The police were called in by a woman because of a disturbance, but they were called over an hour after the victim was killed.

Fast forward a few weeks, and the DA is really pushing for this case to go through as quickly as possible (against the advice of Frank who wants more time to investigate). The remaining players are on the Jury. Carly Moreno (A waitress at a local coffee shop), Sean Finnigy (a pawn shop owner), and much to the delight of the press, playboy millionaire Patrick Bateman.

Slowly the jury come to the conclusion from several prods that something is not right too, more so when there is evidence to some of the players of Jury tampering, and moreso still when Carly catches one of the women supposedly involved outside the jury room. The woman (Teris) makes a run for it, escaping past several unconscious guards.

As the plotline progresses, Shane is found not guilty and about to be set free when he kills his cellmate and hangs himself after trying to drink his blood, and things start to go wrong.

The players share a dream sequence where they are driving fast down unlit roads, with no lights. Driven by one of Frank's informants Alexandra Serris. They are bound and gagged and clearly on the run from something. They see shapes in the forest, they see cars in the back window.

Eventually the car loses control and slams into water, the players get out and try to swim to the shore, noticing eventually that the lake is blood rather than water, and that the bodies of their fellow jury members amongst others are floating in it.

When they awake, they get wind of some things that have been happening: People involved in the case have started dying, and fast. In 24 hours, the police investigating the matter, the judge, the jury, and several other peripheral members of the public are executed, leaving only a few survivors (our players and 2 other jury members). Killed by seemingly uninvolved members of the public, all of whom claim to have no memory of the night before or any events leading up to the killings.

The group is quickly put into protective custody where they have several confrontations before making it to a safehouse, including another chase of Teris who again evades them despite being shot. This is where they make there first real break into the World of Darkness.

Whilst at the safehouse the party is accosted by the girl driving the car in the dream sequence (Alexandra) who reveals she is a member of the Camarilla, a secretive Vampire society. She offers the players the choice effectively of joining them (something she has asked special permission to do, due to knowing Frank) or dying, and so the players acquiesce (all except Carly, who the players finally discover was a Vampire all along anyway). Carly is put in charge of taking care of the group.

Two weeks pass whilst the players are in an uncontrolled blood-starved frenzy. Most of the players remember little to nothing of the two weeks after they were turned, other than their first feed, and fleeting glimpses of memories of stalking prey from the rooftops. (The players didn't play this, it was all narrated).

With the exception of Sean, who managed to break away from Carly's watchful eye whilst she tended to the other two, butchering a family of 5 broken down by the side of the road. His memories are often horrific and vivid, and something he is trying to forget.

After regaining some semblance of control, they find themselves alone in a warehouse, their watcher (Carly) is nowhere to be seen. They go through papers and realize two weeks have passed since they were turned, and they don't really know what they should be doing.

They are informed by David Solomon (Alexandra's #2) that they will be helping the Camarilla with various tasks, not least of which is finding out where Teris is. They eventually track her down to the hospital Scott Stallard (the 3 year old) is currently being kept at, who she has apparently been paying visits to. The party use the boy to make contact.

They are informed via her go-between that Tala has been raising a ghoul army, something previously thought impossible in vampire society due to various restrictions. They also find that the murdered wife was one of her ghouls, whilst the husband was a ghoul belonging to Teris.

That night a thick fog sets which covers the city. Hundreds of people go missing, and they soon find out, so do several important vampires. Their focus is shifted from Teris to investigating both this, and a werewolf compound that was massacred during the fog.

They investigate to find that:
There is clearly another group within the Camarilla communicating with each other, and defending themselves against something (possibly against Tala).
There is clearly some people inside the Camarilla who helped this occur.
The Tremere Primarch is involved somehow with the first group. The party have captured a Gangrel involved in the second group.

This is where we left off last. There should be alot more I hope in player notes and whatnot, but like I said, I was trying to keep it brief.

Omar's World of Darkness Campaign

Game System: World of Darkness.
Campaign setting: Chicago, 1986.
Campaign type: Mystery/Action.
Gamemaster/Dungeonmaster/Host: Omar

Title: Family Matters (Hey, usually I don't actually make my titles known, that's just what I called it in my notes. If I knew I was putting it online I'd have put some effort in.)

Plot: The players are (mostly) members of a jury overseeing a high profile murder case the press have dubbed "The Iron Man Killings", where a woman was seemingly bludgeoned to death with a hot iron by her husband. The case seems cut and dry at first but more and more evidence comes to light that shows not everything is quite as it seems.

Comments:
This is going to be a slightly dark introduction to the World of Darkness. You have supernatural elements that can be quite subtle or quite extreme. Vampires, Werewolves, Fae, the Spirit World, all exist in my campaigns, but these all exist in the background, away from the prying eyes of mortals.

The objective of the campaign is to give players an idea of the world they're living in, and slowly immerse them in it, having them slowly uncover more and more of the World of Darkness, at which point the campaign will likely turn more active.

The First Post

Ladies and Gentlemen.

I have taken the liberty of setting up a blog to organize our shenanigans.

We've gone far too long trying to organize ourselves when we have nowhere to collate our information. This blog is an effort to end that.

Every week, I will be putting up a post regarding a specific session. We can all come here and look up or contribute to the details (which day will it be on, can everyone make it, etc). That is something we need, we've cancelled two sessions this month solely because we were unclear as to what was happening.

What else I'll be doing is including updates on my campaign on the blog, putting up suggestions for other campaigns in the blog and just generally keeping everyone in the loop on what I'm thinking.

Finally, this blog I'm hoping can act as a catalyst or recruitment tool for getting a proper gaming/roleplaying society set up in Dubai/UAE.

I'm including all the tags we might use in the bottom of this blog to help organize future posts.
